If you have Vo hints on, you should get explanations of each unit as you flick through them.
If I remember rightly, mages can attack multiple enemy units at once, while Knights are just super tough, though I haven't' played the game for a while since I' I finished all the story battles.
Generally speaking the strategy is actually more about maximising production, taking out random fights to fill up soul wells for rare resources, and building as much as possible before taking on each new major enemy force.
I really hope though that the story gets continued in a future update, since the world seems interesting and there are some quite unique hints about what you might encounter later.

For me it's now available along with the knight unit. No clue what it does, but I got a fourth settlement started and I expect I'll find out when I go up against the marsh land pact. I'm taking out lesser forces around them first to gather resources and settlements to maybe get enough fighting units to take them on. The marsh land pact has 300 units which is the largest force I've found so far in the game and is about 3 times the size of te next largest force. -- United States has 633 Billionaires with only 10 doing any annual significant giving.
