In the real world where you find a forest you also find fungus. Some of it on the surface and much of it underground. It's been found that the fungus in a forest is used by the trees to pass information and resources to each other from the oldest trees to the youngest trees. Understanding that, it could be in the Harry Potter books that whomping willow got warnings from the fungus telegraph about approaching people and animals and then went into action. If someone was going into a forest and trying to chop down or otherwise damage living trees maybe other living trees could go on the attack before they left that forest. I remember when I was in Phoenix one day I went to a park and got a little too close to a jumping cactus and got shot by that cactus. The thorn wasn't as bad as a sajuaro cactus since it wasn't hooked but I would have left that cactus alone anyway but the plant didn't know so it went on the attack. Was there fungus underground that alerted the cactus, I don't know I didn't stay around long enough to find out and I didn't have a spade with me to dig and find out.
