If you're not doing so, make use of sanctuary before challenging a boss. If you're running out of mana, ask for potions or scrolls on auction or check player shops.
A few hundred to a thousand gold will buy you enough consumables to take out pretty much anything at your level if you're otherwise having significant difficulty.
Alternatively, go elsewhere for a while and try again when you're
stronger. You do not have to approach the game or questlines in a
linear fashion.

The class selection order I chose was necromancer, cleric, mage, and starting on warrior. The rest of the classes have 7 digit experience level costs. One thing I did find out was healing wounds on minions and blessing minions helps them last a little bit longer. As a result of doing the stone dragon quest, I got three levels out of that but won't get a fourth level.
