Player shops do cost rent, the amount depending on how much you have in it, and where the shop is located.
Some players do make money with them, but it is not necessarily easy. Just because you found something does not mean others will be willing to pay for it, even assuming they know about your shop in the first place.
Many shop owners will advertise themselves on the auction
channel, which does help to deal with the latter somewhat, but
it's still not something to take on lightly.
At this point I also need to make note of the fact that while you
can theoretically do a lot of your experience gathering and
progression via crafting, a certain amount of combat is going to
be mandatory, especially beyond level 29. There is no "pacifist
mode".
clan heaven has a player shop they run. That may have cost them rent in terms of donations or gold from their game bank accounts. I suppose if a player is rich enough they could afford to open and rent a shop but I haven't got into game mechanics enough to know myself yet.

I was reading the site and thought I saw mentions of player shops. Are those run by players? If so, then that might also be a way for a non-combatant to make friends while also being helpful. You can learn fishing from the druid. Once you've learned fishing find fishing spots and rotate those and do fishing. You'll gain experience and levels that way and if you get to Naftali talk to finn and do his fishing quest. Reorx at least accepts caught fish as sacrifices maybe other gods do as well. Have the channels open for conversations while fishing happens too. Fishing contests happen every so often and winning one of those gets an experience bonus but fishing outside contests can also increase experience. With levels and the right classes you'll be able to learn to build fires and cook and eventually get into other crafting and either donating crafted items to donation rooms or other players or auctioning them will increase your usefulness to others in the game.
