I've written previously about wanting to play an online text-based game called Alteraeon using the Nexus Client from Iron Realms Entertainment. Well today I set everything up, from the Nexus account required to connect third-party games to the app, all the way through character creation on Alteraeon. That took some stopping and starting but most of that was because I was learning how to interact with the game, while also learning the best way to get around the client. The way these games seem to work is by sending blocks of text that you respond to by typing commands in an edit box at the bottom of the screen. And Nexus doesn't automatically read the newest block of text when it pops up at the top of the screen. So during character creation I was scrolling from the bottom rthe screen back up to the top to see what was needed next, class, character name, etc., going through all the previous blocks in the process. But once I started actually exploring the world, I realized that a faster way to do things would be to type my command then keep scrolling to the bottom of the screen so it wrapped back to the top, read the fresh text, then reverse the process so it wrapped back the other way so I could reach my edit box and type the next command. Now, I'm not a fast typist and make frequent fingering mistakes and I haven't been able to reach the Settings menu in the Nexus app yet so I'll have to do some more fiddling. And I'm not sure I'll be very effective in a group battle situation. But overall the app does work and I would recommend it if you're on an older version of Android and want to use a physical keyboard rather than a touchscreen.
