My 40GB iPod is a 4th generation.  I did not use the earlier gens, so don't 
know how it is in 
comparison, but all menu items click both from the iPod itself and through 
headphones.  
The machine, when reset, defaults to clicking only through the iPod's internal 
speaker, so 
even if you have to reset the unit, you will still be able to navigate if you 
are familiar with the 
menus.
