Hi, Shaun. Well, game programming is a very advanced field of programming as it involves a working knolege of math, helpful to know physics, and of course be skilled in a programming language. Some languages are better suited than others. The best game development language in my opinion is C++, but has a large learning curve. Visual Basic .net and C# .net are much easier to use, and of course support the managed DirectX 9. As for what compiler you use if you want to go very cheeply the .net framework SDK comes with commandline compilers. You would use any IDE, and then compile via commandline. I will say from experience not the funnest way to build serious projects. There is the .net Express compilers for C# and Visual Basic. They work, and I haven't really done much with them as I have invested in Visual Studio Pro. Although, starting with the Express versions of either C# or Visual Basic is a good place to start learning to code, and practice with DirectX stuff.
