HI,
I am not sure what you might need for a "computer"dm. obviously, you would
need to know what monsters and other critters go where, what their powers are
and how you are going to have the game represent those conditions in a way
that affect the characters. Your A.I. should probably have an idea of how
smart a critter is as well. an orc encountering a party would react diffrent
then an evil wizard. One would rush into battle with a war cry, while a smarter
wizard would sit back and cast spells. Most likely an offensive spell first
then a defensive spell if he anticipates fighters getting in close. In
addition, an evil wizard would have some kind of blocker for him, monsters or
fighters to run interferance while he took care of the more dangerous spell
casters and ranged weapon characters.
A dragon would not go into up front combat until all his/her spells and breath
weapons were used up, and then they would use fly by attacks with their tail or
other things. Fighting a dragon underground would be a diffrent matter, they
would have to go head to head.
Animals can be swayed from attacking by rangers and druids as well as the
simple offer of food
Some monsters might take bribes, if they intelligent and more neutral.
In addition not all monsters of the same type act the same. One band of orcs
might be like wild barbarians, another group might be more willing to make and
use traps and pits to protect themselves.

there are also logical groupings of monsters as well.
Orcs might get along with goblins after a fashion, but not dwarfs. A cavern
filled with a orc group might have trained war dogs, goblin and kobold slaves.
They might have an orc ranger or two who raised a bear or ravens and use them
as look outs or reserves incase of invasion. Half orcs might form an elite
fighting force within that orc grouping, and the ruler of the orcs could be an
orc shaman or wizard, or a dark elf, or even an evil merchant who set them up
where they are able to wreck havoc on certain trade routes owned by
competition.

I guess what I am trying to say is that each monster is diffrent according to
intelligence and wisdom, but also their associations and past history in
dealing with others.

Hope this helps
allan
