They're addictive! I think they might be classified as RPGs. They're kind of like those "choose your own adventure" books. A story starts, and then you play your way through the story by typing commands into the computer. They're called text adventures because, instead of graphics or audio, the whole story is played out through text that appears on screan. They're actually much more sophisticated than the choose your own adventure books, because where as those would tell you what your options were, if you want to do X go to page 8 or if you want to do Y go to page 10, in these games you have to figure out what you're character's next move should be (in these games you are given a character to play as), and it isn't always obvious. You know whether you got it right or not by whether the game responds with new information or simply repeats what it already said with no change. Try them! Though I highly suggest that you don't try them on a school night or when you have an assignment due.
Hint. You can't scroll back up the screen to re-read what the game just said. Instead, you have to use the scroll-back dialogue box, which gives you a read-only edit field which you can then read with the PC cursor in Jaws. It also allows you to select and copy text from the adventure to the clipboard which you can then paste into the commands you type. This dialogue box is very helpful, although I've run into one game so far in which it didn't read back the text of the story, only the commands I'd typed from the start of the game till then. Anyway, hope that helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mvfegund" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 5:40 PM Subject: Re: audyssey: Need help with winfrotz games. > What exactly are text games? > > > Thanks > > > Ivan----- Original Message ----- > From: "FigureInTheCloak" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 3:17 PM > Subject: Re: audyssey: Need help with winfrotz games. > > >> Thanks!
