Hi Phil As Brandon said it seems that you need to hold down the arrow [numpad 4 or whatever] for a second or two then jump. I've finally made it off the ropes myself just recently.

I know you can't go all the way up because the rope is attached to the ceiling and you hit your head. So I go down one, two three four five hands and try to move off, jump off swim off and jiggle off with no luck. I also do these at the level the sounds start assuming the ground is there. Maybe with the shift left or right arrow it should tell you ground level or sand or something! So, I'm still hanging on to that blankety blank rope and want to get off!
