Hi,
The only question I have about mailman is this: When you use an email to
change something, will you get a confirmation email that what you requested
took place? Thanks for the help.

Subject: audyssey: ***IMPORTANT*** Mailman list management instructions

I've had a few questions asked of me on how to configure your Mailman
list subscription. Below is a message which I hope you guys save for
future reference in case you get lost. For this small tutorial we will
assume that your email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and you are
managing your subscription to [email protected] list. For this
tutorial you will use the password loser which is in all lower-case.

First and foremost let me say that using the web interface is by far the
easiest since all buttons, checkboxes, and edit boxes speak very well
with speech and also have extra help telling you what the options mean.
So, there is lesson number 1. Use the web interface located at
  http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Here you can
subscribe, unsubscribe, go nomail, return from nomail, set digest on or
off, change your list password, change list message languages, and a few
other things which I very likely forgot but are not as important.

Lesson 2, using email. If you just want to make a quick change/update to
your list settings and you do not want to use the web interface then the
most common email address is the request address. In this case it is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] When this address is used you can do all
those things I mentioned above in lesson 1. Before I get into the nitty
gritty details of the request address let me add that if you just want
to subscribe or unsubscribe you can use [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED] respectively. In both cases you will get
a confirmation email asking you to confirm you really want to do this.
This happens for two reasons, first is in case you were just playing
around and did not mean it and second is in case someone forged your
email address trying to add or remove you from the list without your
permission. Again, using the request address you can do all this and a
lot more. The subscribe and unsubscribe address are just a quick, no
hoopla way of doing it but are not as flexible.

Ok, now onto lesson 2, using the request box. The address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] In most cases you can put your command in
just the subject line but I really recommend you just put a period or
two in the subject and instead put all your commands in the body of the
message. Please try to remember and end all your commands with the word
'end' without the quotes. This will tell Mailman to not try and process
  your nice signature.

The first thing you can do if you want to read Mailman's help file on
using request is send a help command. So the body of your message would
  look like this:

  help
  end

This will return an email to you explaining everything I'm telling you
here but not as friendly and warm like the way I am <smile>. If you want
to subscribe to the list and you want to choose your own list password
then you would type in the body something like this:

  subscribe loser
  end

What happens here is that Mailman subscribes the address in the from
ffield and sets the list password to loser. I know it looks like you are
trying to tell Mailman to subscribe someone named loser but I can assure
you that you are simply telling it the password. If you subscribe via
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address or if you do not specify
a password like the above example then Mailman will randomly choose a
password for you which you can change later on. Speaking of passwords If
you want to make any changes to your list settings you must first
authenticate yourself to the request account when making further changes
like going nomail, switching to digest mode, etc. Simply send email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], again put two periods or something equally
meaningless in the subject and in the body do something like:

  authenticate loser
  set delivery off
  end

Ok, first line authenticates you to Mailman, your from address and your
password will be matched together and if it is a good match then Mailman
will see you want to set your delivery to off. Then you end the commands
with end of course. This has the effect of putting you in nomail mode.
This is good if you will not be reading your email for an extended
period of time. When you come back you simply issue a command like this
  to the request email box:

  authenticate loser
  set delivery on
  end

This as you can tell will place you back in delivery mode to receive
emails. If you want to see what your current settings are you send an
email to the request box with the commands:

  set show
  end

What this will do is send you back your current list settings. Note for
this you don't need a password. This is because you are just viewing the
settings. To change any setting you must use the authenticate line. You
will get a reply from request and in the email you will see something
  like:

      Your current option settings:
          ack off
          digest off
          delivery on
          myposts on
          hide off
          duplicates off
          reminders on

For the most part you can leave these the way they are. If you really
want to know what they mean then I suggest reading the help provided
with the 'set help' command which gives you a detailed description of
what these are. Again, back to lesson 1, all these are better explained
  via the web <smile>.

If you want to change your password you simply send a message to request
with the body looking like this:

  password loser winner
  end

Note, here you did not need to use the authenticate line, again, you
only use the authenticate line when changing one of the options found
under set. As you can tell you provide your current password followed by
the old one. If you simply type in the body:

  password
  end

You will get an email telling you what your password is.

Well, that about does it. Hope you will be clear on using Mailman. It
really is a wonderful mailing list system.
