Hi Tom,
One of the problems is that you may have a $1,000 television with a 15 cent
filter. I once had a nice Pioneer surround sound system but it was real
susceptible to certain Ham radio frequencies. The problem was the complete
lack of filters in the Pioneer.
Older units really did have better components than most of those sold today.
I think "cheap" is the operative word here.

Whack

Jewel,
A toroidal choke is wire, in this case, the appliance cord, wound around a
doughnut shaped "core' made of powdered iron or similar materials cast with
glue.

A toroid is a fancy word for a doughnut shape.

some of these cores are split in half so you can more easilly get the wire
through the middle. Some, particularly those sold by radio shack for
telephone cords, are made in a square rather than a round doughnut and are
in halves with a plastic housing that hinges to open it.

As for keeping appliance generated noise out of your television, that's a
real bear, and there are no simple answers. It usually, but not always,
means that either you have a marginal signal, or the appliance is a really
cheapie piece of junk.

I have no idea what standards, if any, appliance need to meet to be sold
down there, but here they're not supposed to radiate radio frequencies so as
to interfeer with ligitimate radio or television reception.

getting anything done about it is another matter.

If you know any local ham radio types perhaps they might help.

About all you might do is get a better television antenna and assure it is
aimed accurately at the transmitter. It should be connected to your
television with coaxial cable, rather than old fashioned "twin lead." If
the wire from the antenna to the TV is round, that's good. If it's flat
ribbon with two wires, it is highly prone to locally generated interference.

If, on the other hand, you're on cable, then you can gripe at the cable
provider as they should be imune from outside interference.

\Radio shack may sell a so-called "high pass filter' designed to keep radio
interference out of your TV, sometimes these help.

Tom
