Dale, You're quite correct about the bios., there may be issues like checksums etc. in some bios versions that'd have to be kept up to date but theres no reason it can't be done from a standard application.
some one just has to do the work. My wife looked around and there are diagnostic programs which read the bios and display contents, but don't seem to modify it. I don't know why. In installing a new linux distribution on a box at work recently, my sysadmin guy told me the only time linux cares about the bios is to get the proper device to boot from a cold start. Otherwise linux doesn't care what the bios thinks, it figgers out everything for its self. Obviously you need the bios to tell the machine where to boot from on cold start before the operating system is loaded but after that who cares.
