That's easy Shawn, they don't know the words.  After everyone stops groaning 
I'll try to give a serious answer.

Most ceiling fans use a DC motor, so the AC line current has to be changed 
to DC by a rectifier.  There should be a little filtering in the form of a 
capacitor or a large inductance in the motor itself.  If the fan is very old 
the capacitor may have failed and replacing it would quiet the fan.  If the 
fan has hummed since day one it was poorly designed, a common problem in 
everything from chairs to computer software.
