Joe, Back in the day before I traded my wood stove for a swimming pool I used a product called "Chopper1." The device looks like your standard issue single bit ax with the exception of two small wedge shaped levers one located on each side of the ax style blade. When you struck the wood the levers would expand and assist in the splitting action. I also built a unit back in the early 80s using a VW rabbit diesel, hydraulic pump and a blade ram off of a bull doser. If you want details on that one I will need to do some serious digging.
