Ralph, Any mineral oil will do. It sounds to me like what you have is only for dressing after the wood has been well treated but I don't know for sure.
The reason you want mineral oil is that it won't go rancid or directly grow any bacteria. Cherry though is a little problematic in that it will darken with age, darken very quickly when it gets wet even from glue. It is also pretty hard so getting oil to penetrate takes time. There are properties in the wood which oxidize in the presence of light. This is often a feature of the wood but might not be always considered so for some applications. The finish you have may be all right but just isn't getting absorbed into that hard wood. Warming the oil say in a pan of hot water to bring the temperature up will help it to penetrate a little better and warming the wood too but be careful, not too hot for too long, dry it out a little but not to the cracking point. Another way might be to apply the oil and wrap it with something like a plastic bag or even some of that food wrap so that the volatiles don't evaporate and will penetrate more quickly. There are other finishes which are not toxic, things like Tongue oil or I think Teak oil but check labels. You don't want a finish that skins over or it will peel, some of the water based poly products for example are safe to eat but will eventually and unevenly scratch off. Hope this helps.
