Yes, you just raise the blade enough to cut through your workpiece and slide
the jig through the saw. You then have the exact place where the blade cuts.
2 by 4's are tall enough for 3/4 inch thick stock, but you will want taller
rails for thicker wood. You want there to be enough of the rails left to keep
the jig together and strong.

You can make it as long as you want. You could even make more than one for
different lengths. The nice thing about this jig is that if you make it with
the saw cut in the middle of it, it is balanced on both sides of the saw. This
prevents it from tipping off one end when a long piece is placed on it.

Good luck!

  I get the picture.
I like this idea and I think I will try to build me one.
only question I have is once you build the sled there is no slot for the
blade. So do you just run it through the saw and cut through the plywood and
then move the sled forward enough to line the blade up with your board to be
cut? Also I assume that you would just need to raise the blade enough to
acount for the plywood on the bottom of the sled and the piece to be cut.

Oh one more thing I think you said to make the trof about 12 inches from
front to back and as wide as you want.
for an 8 foot board do you think that about 3 feet would suffice?
or would you go more or less?
