You did not say how many shelves or what length you were wanting to end up with. If you were say wanting shelves about two foot long then the smart thing would be to saw it in the middle making two four foot boards and then cut each in half. This way the cuts are pretty well balanced each time. When sawing a short piece off a long one on a table saw it becomes a little difficult to keep things from twisting.
