Lee,
Well, make up the plans and get it approved by the township. Then get it
inspected by the local code enforcement officer and you are good to go.
Hmm, wonder what would happen should you place a large rock on either side
of the box? Say one which weighs 3 or 400 pounds?
I did that to a box when I lived in Colorado Springs. We had some a******
who thought that it was great fun to drive down the street with his 4x4 and
wipe out all of the mail boxes.
I put a 400 pound rock just at the edge of the mail box and planted some of
that pink grass around it. It sure looked nice too.
One night I heard the most horrific noise and crash outside my home.
I called the police to tell them that I thought there must have been some
sort of crash on the street.
When they arrived they found the aforementioned 4x4 sitting by the curb on
the other side of the street with the right front wheel bent under the
frame.
Hmm, must have hit something pretty solid to do all that?
Upon some scrutiny it was discovered that all of the mail boxes up to and
including mine were wiped out. Golly, I guess that big rock must have got
him huh?
Cy, the Ancient Okie...

Keven said" check with your local authorities" and I did. darned if you are
not right. at least here in the town of Greenport,Upstate.. Here is what I
was told" the land where your mailbox sets is property of the Town. should
you construct a device or structure not approved by same said township ,
then yes you are in fact liable. I think of it as"
dammed if you do and dammed if you don't". thanks Kevin. Lee
