Kevin, The expanded metal grating would work really well accept that it is way to heavy for your application, it's expensive and a pain to work with. I just made security screens for my shop windows out of it and it was a real fist-fight. I would recommend going to your local home center and finding a light duty woven fence material. The other thing you need to consider is framing. If you live somewhere that gets a lot of wind you might want to secure them to the surrounding bricks. No sense in chasing the damn things all over after a wind storm.
