Unless you plan on emptying it quite often, you might want to reconsider 
putting anything in the bottom.   If you don't mind emptying it though, you 
could put three or four fire brick in the bottom and then lay a wire rack out 
of a refrigerator or freezer across the bricks.

  I just picked up another 55 gallon steel barle I am going to punch some
  wholes in the bottom and around the bottom third or so to get good air flow
  for better burning. I also was looking to put it up on patio blocks. what I
  have not figured out is what can I put inside at the bottom few inches to
  maximize the air flow that way for max burning.
