Tom, Is their any way possible for you to apply a small amount of air pressure to the sink side of the drain and then feel for the air leek underneath? If you have access to an air compressor turn the regulator down to about 8LBS, use a rag to seal around the outflow side of the sink and squeeze the trigger on the air nozel. You may need an assistant to man the air nozel otherwise it might be a bit of a stretch from sink to pipes. The best part of this technique is that air won't get your seeing fingers wet.
