robert, As you'll see from the soldering articles, a gun is not the reccommended best device for many jobs.
the problem is that you have to hold tension in your gun hand to hold the trigger, and due to the physiology of the hand, you are much more likely to move whilst waiting for the gun to get hot. for basic electronics and wiring, a smallish pencil iron is much better learning the setup and guidance techniques Bill Gerrey developed. Once you really understand how it all goes, you can use whatever you want including a gun, but i think you'll find a gun will cause you much frustration at first. Read the articles, there are many misconceptions out there about soldering and not all of them among blind folks.
