thanks for your email and interest in my chainsaw work I use some of the techniques which you describe as well as a lot of my own skills including using the front and back handles as rotation sense to work out the angle of the blade in terms of a cut or sculpt, running the main handle on its own for the stihl ms170 for skinning, running the back handle to control feeding the blade and moving it back and forth to gauge penetration of the blade. at no time do I have any contact with the blade arm. when carving I always use the judgement of the trigger being directly inline with the bar of the machine. so its a good guideline and listening to the sound of the cut to the amount I'm cutting in or through. for more tips please get in touch and I'll post more lew
