That would work fine, probably 15 degrees. Trouble with cross cutting though 
especially a relatively short piece is that the wood will tend to break 
after a short time.

You can cut it along the grain but again you are getting your fingers a 
little close to the blade and usually the hold-down doesn't come that close.

I have done it by holding down a piece either side of the one to be cut and 
sliding the work piece between them slicing down. There is always the risk 
the saw will throw either the good piece or the waste but it throws it away 
from you so that is a little better.

Your method would also work using the miter gauge of the table saw. The only 
real draw-back is the direction of the grain.

They do make hardware too, something like many gate latches, a piece of 
metal which drops over a peg attached to the door and wall the door backs up 
against. You push the door open and it grabs. I suppose you could also use a 
magnet and metal strip or washer.
