Weller and others make a number of soldering stations which are well worth the money. Many have a power switch, good thermostatic control, a small well for a sponge and a sort of funnel shaped coiled spring like holder to drop the iron into holding it securely safely and protecting the user from inadvertent contact with the hot business end.
I have only done a small amount of electrical soldering, the gun I don't much like though I thought I would and for the same reasons as given, it is heavy, hard to hold in place especially while holding the trigger and they don't heat all that rapidly. Maybe more important is that to get a good solder joint and electrical connection it is necessary to heat the points to be joined. This is not just about getting a drop of molten lead over a connection, the bits being joined must be hot enough to bond with the solder. The flux in the core will help this but alone it is not enough. Like most other things a highly skilled craftsman can make due with inferior tools. Those of us and I believe this to include all of us here in this discussion are not highly skilled craftsman or we wouldn't be having this discussion, (with the possible exception of one or two maybe). So, if you want to get skilled and enjoy success go out and buy a good quality soldering station. It won't guarantee success but anything less will probably only frustrate and render discouraging enough results that you will give up and never know you could have had some measure of success and pleasure.
