For a job like paneling a wall which isn't already covered with a surface the best answer I know is to actually measure! Imagine that.
Most panels actually have grooves, they may vary a little in sequence but one will always fall on 16 inch intervals across the sheet. If an edge is centered on a stud it shouldn't be difficult to identify the first groove 16 inches over and follow it up and down tapping in nails. The next one will be 16 inches from the opposite edge. You can cut a stick 16 inches or 32 inches or even fully 48 inches long and mark the appropriate intervals. Unless the studs are more than three quarters of an inch out of line which approaches 2 cm. you are bound to hit the stud. A magnet will pick up nails or screws in a stud too so, if the wall is covered with drywall or something else you still should be able to pick up one stud to use as a starting point for your sequence of 16 inch centers. I did once have a stud finder, only modestly blind friendly, it was a magnet suspended from a pivot point in a sort of plastic shell. When it passed over a screw or nail it would swing, the idea was that the optically enabled would move it into a position where a little pointer fell between a pair of marks on the blastic housing. Usually the magnet would click against the side as it was attracted across the shell but in any case the attraction could be felt. I lost the thing many years ago now and haven't really needed one much since.
