You should keep moving the sander all of the time it is operating and if it is at all aggressive either run it off over an edge or lift it off while still running.
Regular orbital sanders leave a sort of curly-cue effect of scratches in the final surface because at least half of the action is across the grain. This cannot be felt and often not really seen until a clear or translucent finish is applied. The so-called random orbit sanders apparently diminish that effect substantially. I don't hardly use my small sander for that reason and when I do I finish with several minutes of work by hand in the grain direction in the hope I will have removed any residual swirls. This is not an issue when using an opaque finish or paint because it fills the pattern and further, covers it so it cannot be seen through the finish. I have never used a random orbit sander, this is why I am curious to know if that is what you are using. Thanks.
