There are other saws than worm drives with the blade on the left, more and 
more companies offer them, the balance is better and the visibility, if that 
matters to you is much better.

I think that most right handed people who use a hand saw work with the end 
to be cut off sticking out to the right. When they first made circular saws 
they just built them with similar assumptions. If just cutting off the end 
of a 2 by 4 supporting the saw on the work makes sense if you naturally work 
off to the right. Just speculation of course.

I should get a new saw, mine has worked hard and it is clearly getting tired 
and I have considered the worm drive but I don't do that sort of hard work 
much any more and would be more likely to use my compound miter saw if I do.

I might do fine with a high quality battery saw but until they standardize a 
little more I think I will wait.
