Hi Otis,
I have used a very small, simple CNC with a dos software package
to run the G code interpreter. Yes this machine actually came
with a dos interpreter. The original software was graphic but I
could tell it was basically running text through a graphics card.
I contacted the company, Taig Tools in Chandler arizona, and
there programmer did up a text version for us. Only disadvantage
was no ability to do an on-screen run through with tool positions
shown but that wouldn't be accessible anyhow.

It works fine in the simple applications we've used.

Also , as in Ray's post, the Seatle Washington Light house has
done a lot with CNC mills and they should be able to tell you
what and how they do it.

As for generating your own G code, it's not very complex, if you
can imagine what you want the code to do and just discribe it in
terms of X, Y, and Z movements.

However working with the actual CAD/CAM software is another
matter indeed and may well be beyond current access technology
unless you have that very expensive AutoCad package Lou told us
about a while back.

So the answer is to a limited extent yes it can be done, depends
on what you want to accomplish, how patient you are, and how much
money you have access too. Like everything else.

I don't know what was going on with the "touch pad" you were
learning on.
