Good suggestion Ron, I guess at the time I was originally doing this,  
my friend and I were so intent on solving the problem, we created  
more mess than was necessary. grin
Ah, well at this point I'm quite sure there's a stud where I  want to  
drill, but the issue is that moving the bracket to the very end of  
the rail will not look overly nice and my wife was not happy with  
this idea. This is why I wanted to drive a screw through the rail and  
into the wall or come at it from the back. The screw through the  
front would be considerably easier despite the hard wood, but filling  
the hole in might be a bit more tricky. I believe they make a bit or  
something that would make a plug. If I made a plug, I could then fit  
it back in and it wouldn't be so noticable. Does anyone know what  
that tool/bit is called?
