Kieth I have a door just like what you are describing. My door had a problem with the side cables. the one side bound up. I raised the door and took off the cables. I have to say the door is heavy without the springs holding it up. When I say heavy I mean it is literally like picking up over 100 pounds and I do not exadurate. not sure how an alumanum door can bee so heavy but it is. I got the cables wownd up again but it came undone again. It looks easy but unless you know how to tention the springs you will not get it wright. I am not sure but it may be a 2 man job I had some one come out and fix it. I would have had them show me but I am a renter so it is no skin off my nose. If you know a handy man that is willing to show you how it is done I think you would be able to do it if you had to in the future. All I am saying is from experiance do not try this untill you find out how to tention the springs properly. -----Original Message----- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Keith Christian Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 7:05 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem
Hi, I had a similar problem a few years ago too. I am actually having it again. The door is out of balance and the opener will not pull it up. I can push it up pretty easily, but there is a noticeable gap on one side of the garage where it should meet the ground. The other side of the garage is flush with the ground. Last time this happened, I had someone come out and adjust the door, but I'd like to do it this time. Does anyone have suggestions how to do this? The door is a roll up aluminum door and there is a big spring that needs to be tightened or loosened above the door. Thanks, Keith -----Original Message----- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alan Siman Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 1:05 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] electric garage door problem Had a similar problem. One of 2 problems encountered. First if your opener is a few years old there is a plastic clutch with sprockets that break off and cause the drive to stop pulling the door open. Second see if the springs have broken. They are either on each side or on the top of the door running the whole length of the top. This is easy to check by disengaging the drive and seeing if you can lift it manually. If you can your springs are fine.
