Tom, I have this very vague recollection of some kind of liquid you could dip the ends of the line in to harden / fuse the rope. I seem to remember seeing someone unbraid the end of a rope, double it back to form a loop, braid it back into the rope, and then dip it in this liquid which, when cured, seemed to stiffen the whole loop up.
