Hi Dan, The taught line, is that the knot that tree surgeons use. A few years ago I was talking to a tree surgeon who just finished cutting down a very large tree. He had a small seat or saddle that was tried to a special sliding knot. This knot held him in place until he wanted to lower himself. then he pulled on the knot and he slid a little farther down the rope. He told me that he also uses this when he paints his home. He did show me how to tie it but that was years ago and information went out the attic window years ago. Lenny http://www.geocities.com/lenny_mchugh/

Hey Tom, Yeah, I agree about learning to tie knots. I have learned a number of knots but have always had to feel the process. As a rock climber, backing up a bowline with a half hitch is absolutely necessary. The coolest knot tieing trick I know is the one handed bowline. Very cool and fast. The double fishermans is a great knot, and I always backup the tails with a half hitch on that one as well. the one knot I really wish I could remember to tie is the taughtline hitch. You basically get a long loop and the knot at the base of the loop can be slid up and down to adjust the length of the loop but tightens up under tension. It is great for adjusting the tension on a tent line. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University.
