Join master woodworkers Gord Graff, Hendrik Varju and Steve Maxwell as they share valuable information gained over 20 years in the shop. These two-hour seminars fill up fast, so sign up early! For fees and info about seminar times, visit www.canadianhomeworkshop.com/show <http://transcontinental.icongo.com/frontEndComponents/genericComponents /newsletterTrackLink.cfm?linkID=819038&newsletterID=9189&memberID=546353 &format=HTML> . Success with Biscuit Joiners seminar <http://transcontinental.icongo.com/frontEndComponents/genericComponents /newsletterTrackLink.cfm?linkID=819039&newsletterID=9189&memberID=546353 &format=HTML> Biscuit joinery has revolutionized the way many woodworkers work with wood. This quick and simple joinery method has replaced some of woodworking's more traditional joinery methods, but are you getting the most out of your biscuit joiner? In this in-depth seminar, Gord Graff walks you through all aspects of biscuit joinery: purchasing a biscuit joiner, maintenance, basic and advanced operations, biscuit joiner jigs and even some of the pitfalls of biscuit joinery are all covered in this comprehensive seminar on biscuit joinery. Learn how you can improve your woodworking joinery skills by becoming fully acquainted with this unique joinery machine. Expert Wood Finishing in the Home Workshop seminar <http://transcontinental.icongo.com/frontEndComponents/genericComponents /newsletterTrackLink.cfm?linkID=819039&newsletterID=9189&memberID=546353 &format=HTML> Does finishing get you down? Part of the problem is the home workshop itself. Dust, poor ventilation, dim lighting-it's not exactly a finishing booth in there. Steve Maxwell has wrestled with wood finishing challenges in his home workshops for more than twenty years, and he has agreed to share his best secrets of real-world wood finishing in this seminar. Steve will show you how to prepare wood for finishing, reveal his favourite wipe-on stains and sealers, demonstrate little-known techniques for creating glass-smooth results, and outline the specifics of coaxing water-based urethane to dry without looking bumpy. Curious about sprayers? Steve will also show how an HVLP system may be just the ticket for finishing in your home shop. Tame Your Tablesaw Before it Bites Back seminar <http://transcontinental.icongo.com/frontEndComponents/genericComponents /newsletterTrackLink.cfm?linkID=819039&newsletterID=9189&memberID=546353 &format=HTML> The tablesaw is the cornerstone to many woodworking shops. Yet, it's a notoriously intimidating machine to use successfully. Kickback and other potentially dangerous incidents are common, not to mention burned edges, blow-out, chipped veneers and inaccurate cuts. In this detailed seminar, Hendrik Varju covers the finer aspects of accurate cutting with a serious focus on safety. Learn why your splitter and blade guard are so important. You'll see proper ripping technique, from shorter pieces to longer boards, including proper hand and foot positioning. What does a pushstick do for you? What about featherboards, push pads, zero-clearance inserts and roller stands? How do you achieve accurate crosscuts, and just what should you believe about the left-tilt versus right-tilt issue? This seminar cuts through the marketing hype, telling you what you need to know to operate your tablesaw with safety and confidence. ________________________________ February issue of the magazine, on newsstands now: WOODWORKING PROJECTS: Front-Hall Bench A combo mirror and bench makes a welcoming entranceway. Is it OK to pour a new floor directly over the old one, or should I start from fresh? Going over the old floor would raise my garage, which might be a good thing, as the slope of my yard directs a lot of runoff towards the garage. -Dwayne Vodden A: Before any repairs, find out why the original floor is going bad. It's probably a moisture problem, but it could be from inadequate sub-surface prep in the first place. The fact you suggest the slope and drainage at the garage is not optimal gives some clues. You may need to move water away from the garage. Once that's resolved, the old surface will need to be thoroughly cleaned of any material that can lift away. Powerwashing and TSP will help. Consider a slight slope for the new floor, draining to the garage door. A 2" depth to the new surface would be suitable. If the old floor had cracks, you should place a wire mesh into the cement to stabilize it. -CHW Pro Don Ross ________________________________ project <http://transcontinental.icongo.com/frontEndComponents/genericComponents /newsletterTrackLink.cfm?linkID=819044&newsletterID=9189&memberID=546353 &format=HTML> For more questions and answers, or to send questions yourself, go to Ask A Pro <http://transcontinental.icongo.com/frontEndComponents/genericComponents /newsletterTrackLink.cfm?linkID=819045&newsletterID=9189&memberID=546353 &format=HTML> section of our website.
