One of the more interesting things about duct tape, is that, in fact, it was actually called duck d u c k tape. It was originally developed as an all-purpose, somewhat water resistant, adhesive for the military. It was named for the cotton duck fabric backing. After WW II HVAC guys started using it to seal duct work and it then became known as duct d u c t tape.
