Dear Jim:
I have no vision these days and I prefer to use the hurricane spreaders
that you carry. They have a canvas bag that will hold twenty plus pounds of
seed a strap that goes over your shoulder and head. Once you get it loaded, it
is fairly comfortable to carry with the load on your left side and with a crank
which is convenient for your right hand to operate. There is an adjustable
opening on the bottom which allows the seed to drop down where it hits the
turning propeller which slings the seed in an approximately 180 degree half
circle. If you are really cranking the propeller, it will cover a wide area as
you walk along. When using this device to sew grass, don't stop and have a
long conversation with anyone, or you will have a lot of grass seed in one
spot.
If your lawn is large enough to require more than a hundred pounds of seed,
I would suggest a spreader on wheels. Those are a good deal more expensive.
The portable model which you carry can also be used to spread granular
fertilizer. These devices are especially useful where you are concentrating on
spots and not an entire lawn.
As a child, I recall my father sewing an entire field with one of these
portable models.

                Yours Truly,

                Clifford Wilson

What would be the best way for some one who is totally blind to spread grass
seed? I will need to do as I will probably be wanting to do this soon.

The one I have drops the material below the spreader, but I can control the
amount being dropped. Being that my wife can see, she could do a uniformed
  job.
