Hi Keith, Yes, all sliding miter saws can cut dados. They can not use dado blades. Some saws are easier to set up than others. For instance my old craftsman required two wrenches to change the depth stop. This is greatly improved with my new saw. The new saw has a spring tensioned wing nut for the adjustment.
The way that I made one was fairly easy. After setting the depth I figured out where I wanted the dado to start and made a stop block for the stock. I then took a piece of scrap wood that I wanted to slip into the dado. I held this between the stock and the stop block and made the first cut. I then removed the scrap piece and slid my stock down about 1/8 inch and made another cut. I repeated this process until the stock was down to the stop block. I then used a chisel to scrape out anything left. And a little sandpaper to help clean.
