I know this is veering a bit, but on my street in San Francisco one evening,
a 12,000-volt transformer decided to self-destruct in stages. At first, the
lound quick growls I heard from within the house sounded like someone's
attempt to start a car with a nearly dead engine and no muffler. But then
the power went off subsequent to one of those grunts so I set up my trusty
dolbyized Sony walkman and got the rest of the 20-minute show. With each pop
it splattered some of its innards over the street. On the recording, you can
hear one fireman on the ground asking the one on the ladder if he has
enought light. He said: "Oh! I've got plenty of that."
