Actually, man can control most, if not all the variables in skydiving. Just like working with power tools, if you do everything you are supposed to do, pack your chute carefully. Be sure that the airplanes are maintained properly. You exit stable. Maintain awareness of the skydivers around you. Maintain awareness of your altitude. Deploy your chute while in a stable position after having cleared the airspace around you. Then nothing "should" go wrong. But be damn sure, I know no skydiver who would intentionally exit an aircraft with only a single parachute.
