On newsstands now
Summer's almost here, which means it's time to build for the great
outdoors. Sink your #6 screws into six garden projects featured in the
May edition of Canadian Home Workshop, on newsstands now: May is
spring-cleanup season, and it's the perfect time to complete projects
that aren't suited for wintertime. Here are a few:

WOODWORKING PROJECTS:
Plant stand
Junk that rusty old, metal plant stand and build a sturdy cedar pot
stand with collapsible shelves-perfect for placing on the ground or on a
wall.
By Gary Walchuk

Latticed screen
Nothing says eyesore like a bulky air conditioner plopped in the middle
of your garden. Solution: screen it in with a latticed box.
By Paul Lewis

Panelled planter
Forget store-bought pots and build this smart planter box with
all-weather vinyl siding. The vinyl-cedar combination looks great and is
built to last.
By Ryan Shervill

Other projects include a picnic table and benches, trellis and
whirligig.

HOME IMPROVEMENT:
Windows 101
How to choose and install the best windows for every view in your house.

By Jay Somerset

Outdoor painting
Tired of repainting every two years? With proper prep and quality paint,
you can make your paint job last.
By Michel Roy

Building with composite
Hybrid lumber offers freedom and a modern look for outdoor projects such
as decks and fences, but it also requires some special considerations.
By Steve Maxwell

Some questions & answers from our pros

Q: I have to replace an entrance doorknob on a hollow steel door, but
the original holes don't line up; the inside holes are about half a
centimetre over from the outside holes. The "genius" that installed the
door fixed this by gouging the left side of the inside hole a bit to
allow the screw to line up with the thread on the other side. Now there
is a sliver of space on the right side of the door knob on the inside.
How do I get rid of that sliver?
-Marty

A:How annoying! Take the lock set apart to clear space in the opening.
Find a small square piece of aluminum or thin steel sheet that you can
easily cut to a curve that matches the opening on the passage way set
side. Slide this small piece into the opening, between the backside of
the steel of the door and the styrofoam behind it. When it fits, pull it
back out, put a dab of silicone cement on it, and put it back in. Then,
you can use a metal filler, such as auto-body compound, to build up to
the door's outside surface level. When it hardens, sand flat and paint
to match, then put the works back together.
