David, the measuring nut has a mark on one side that one puts up for reference. Each turn of this nut is a 16th of an inch. The 6 and a half inch rod is marked every half inch. So, to measure 2 and a quarter inches, one spins the nut to the 2 inch mark and then counts 4 turns to get the quarter inch.
