Like Clifford I would have thought the same thing about sealing and I have
never punched holes though I have often thought of it after accumulating paint
in the rim when punching the holes would also spray paint. I have heard and
read that tip more than once in the past so on the strength of that I expect it
is correct. Just why manufacturers of paint cans don't do that for us as a
promotional convenience has also occurred to me, could be an advertising point.

Anyway, the answer seems to be that the seal is made between the outside rim of
the lid and the inside wall of the top ring of the can.

It is remarkable just how far paint will spray even when the lid is very gently
tapped down. Wiping around the rim with paper towel only seems to shred then
stick shards of paper to the rim.

  Hi Clifford
I have heard of this done so the paint runs back into the can, however I
have not done this myself because I do not paint.
But if you were unsure of it sealing air tight again cling rap over the
can before you put on the lid should seal it air tight again.

  Regards
  Ray

  Dear Ray:
I found most of the handy tips useful, but I did not understand one tip.
That was the one that recommended using a nail to make holes in the
trough which forms the top edge of the paint can, claiming that these
holes do not interfere with the resealing of the can of paint, as the
  lid seals against the side.
  The paint cans with which
I am familiar would leak and let in air, if holes were punched in the
groove. While some lids do cover the entire top and go down a slight
distance on the outside of the can or bucket, those are usually the
containers for drywall mud or thicker material, and are generally larger
  buckets, five gallons or larger.
The one gallon and smaller cans are usually sealed with a lid that fits
  inside the top rim.
If you can shed any light on how holes can be punched in the groove
without allowing for leaks or drying out the contents from the air going
  in, I would appreciate it.

  Yours Truly,

  Clifford Wilson
