Hi Andy, You have had plenty of good advice already and I don't have a lot to add however that has never shut me up before now.
Can we assume the pipe broke because of ice over the winter? If this is so then you might like to replace the original outdoor valve with either a proper extended one or to now include a new shut-off inside if there isn't already one. I suspect there is one or you wouldn't have just discovered the split. The extended tap is about a foot long and is pushed through the wall. There is a long stem on the handle which operates the actual valve well inside the building. The end is threaded so you need a threaded fitting on the end of the valve. If soldering you would buy a threaded fitting with the appropriate half inch receptacle into which you would solder the end of the pipe. The thread is usually three quarters of an inch which you would educe to half inch. Now from this you could make up what you need with compression fittings which means you would want a union to a 3/4 inch female thread then cut the pipe to the length required to meet the new arrangement. Now when you turn off the water in the winter the valve is well indoors and unless in a very cold place it should not freeze and break. As an alternative you could consider a short length of PEX and the appropriate compression fittings and tools to make up the distance or to mate with an extended valve. Hope this gives you some other ideas or alternatives.
