Hi Lee,

when you take the fitting apart try first picking away all the old Teflon from
the male thread. Something like a tooth pick or a finishing nail can help. It
will come away as very thin threads, a bit dull work but then when you apply
the new tape it will seal much better. It is possible that over the years you
have worn down some of the plastic threading in the fittings so you may need a
little more tape and if by chance someone once cross threaded the fitting that
damage may have left larger voids.

I would be surprised if mixing sealers would be preferable. If the threads are
very loose I would suggest just some sort of pipe dope. If they fit reasonably
snug then just a few more wraps of Teflon tape. I wonder too if maybe there is
a rubber washer either damaged or missing inside the fitting. If your leak
seems to spray around the nut it may be that you need a washer to seat on the
shoulder of the fitting, the sort you fit into the female end of a hose fitting.

It might be time to replace the fittings of course but this often is much more
easily said than done.

Let us know how it goes.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Mixing thread sealers

Top of the morning. Have any of you ever used a combanation of a product
called Pro Dope and teflon tape for sealing plastic or pvc threads? I've
got a serious leak on a pressure joint just before the swimming pool
pump. these threads are 11 years old and are once a year taken apart
and put back together. the threads are also what I would call a wide
thread. not tight like a metal pipe thread. so my question or thought is
to take this apart this afternoon and reseal the threads and joint
using a bit or lot of prodope and some teflon tape . right now there is
just teflon tape on it. the teflon tape I am using is a half inch
  wide tape. thanks.Lee
