Roger,

Without standing their with a beer in my hand going "how the
*/%^ do we do this?" Here is the first thing that comes to
mind.
Can you get underneath the bed rails? If so consider fabbing
up some kind of a sub-frame with a center bar running the
width of the bed. This would allow you to secure under the
bed rails and either lift the bed off with an a-frame or a
cherry picker. I don't know how high you need to go and the
cherry picker might run out of lift at that special moment.
How far does the bed need to go to clear your cab? If you
totally remove those body lift blocks that might buy you
some room on that cab extension as well.
The come-along idea might fly as a last resort but that
would be a little like sex between consenting porcupines
very-very-very carefully.
I am bottling beer to-day so probably won't respond until I
am finished.
If the wood guys get bored with this stuff you can always
get me off list at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good luck man.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Pulling the bed off the Frame

Hello guys,

Ok here goes. I started another project on my 90 GMC. I'm
doing a bed off restoration this year. Here is what i have
done so far. First, i am doing this out side. unfortunately
i don't have a garage.
I started by putting 2 quarter inch pieces of plywood on the
driveway. I then backed up the truck on top of it, so the
wood would cover from the back of the cab to the end of the
frame. I then broke the tension on the tires. I have a
custom made Putnam hitch on the truck, so i placed the Jack
stands under that. I then took off the tires. next, I took
off the mud flaps. then completely unwired everything under
the bed. The 1998 corvette roll pan, and the PIAA back up
lights. Next, i undid the Gas unit that is connected to the
bed. I wrapped the hoses with shrink wrap, then put a couple
of plastic quart bags on it and wrapped it with duct tape so
the water would stay out. I did the same with all of the
wiring with the Roll pan and PIAA lights too. I then undid
the Corvette roll pan, and took it out along with the
tailgate. Next, i tried to loosen the bed mount bolts. I was
only able to get 3 out of the 8 bolts loosened. But i was
per paired for this. I squirted some liquid wrench
penetrating oil on the remainder of the bolts and let sit
over night. I was able to get another two the next day
before snapping the third one in half. I then broke out the
sawzall and cut the last 3 bolts along the top of the frame.
everything is loosened and unbolted to take off the bed. So
here is where i am now, a dilemma. I have a racer back on
the cab. it has only about a quarter of an inch between it
and the top rail of the bed. I really don't want to take off
this, but i need to get the bed off with out touching the
paint. I think i will put a towel on top of the rails just
in case when pulling the bed.
Here is the problem. I really don't have 3 other strong guys
to lift the bed off the frame and put on the 2 by 4 box that
i made. So some how i need to get the bed off of the frame.
Now here is what makes this so much more complicated. I have
a 3 inch body lift in the truck. and i still have three
bolts in the 3 inch blocks that i had to cut. I'm thinking
about getting some cummalongs and trying some how to pull
the bed onto the box i made. except this is making me a
little nervous, because the 3 inch blocks could come off the
top of the frame and do damage to the custom exhaust.
If anyone has any ideas about how to go about removing this
bed off the frame, I would love to hear some suggestions.
