If everyone followed this theory about not cutting holes in the walls of buildings, the window and blind people will go out of business.
Though, I live in a rental now that does not vent. It pulls stuff up through the vent and back out into the room. Perhaps it is supposed to filter it in someway? Anyway, lots of stoves do not vent into the outdoors or the attic. The piping for a vent also has to be cleaned occasionally. I think the big difference for a blind person is that if you do burn something, with out a vent to help clear the room, your fire alarm will go off. I find it difficult to think when that is happening. Also the cooking smells linger longer. It is a big deal to my husband and I am sure he will add the venting if we end up with a house without one. Perhaps you could explain to your mother that you are going to be taking up meth production and will need to vent the air for safety's sake. I do empathize with dealing with parents and housing. With all of our babies health problems last year, we no longer had the money for a down and all the closing costs. My in laws are giving us money towards a downpayment. It is just $5000, but it is making the difference between a house or renting for a year and trying to save up again. I have been thinking of looking up that biblical quote about the borrower being slave to the lender. From the way she is behaving, you would think my mother-in-law is actually paying for the house. Of course that may be because I just spent all day yesterday with her house hunting. In truth, I am not sure she would have behaved any differently if she wasn't giving us any money, I just could have ignored it in those circumstances.
