There is an L-shaped cover located on the opposite end from the opening where the tape comes out. If you are facing the back or speaker side of the unit with the tape port to the left, press on the ridged area along the right edge and pull away from the unit. It fits very tight and there is not much clearance when the battery is in the compartment. Good luck.
