I don't know why a blind person couldn't do the replacement.  Now as to whether 
you can get a different type of ice maker, you probably need to check with the 
manufacturer of the refridgerator for that answer.  One would think if the 
connections are the same it wouldn't matter which type of ice maker.
Mine is one that mounts in the freezer over a tray.
