Fiberglass can be painted. Probably the most durable method is to carefully
clean away any soap and other scum then gently scratch the surface with a fine
sand paper maybe P220 grit to create a tooth on the gel coat of the fiberglass
then clean very carefully any dust. The best paint for the purpose is probably
a two part epoxy. This needs to be done carefully you don't want to get your
hair stuck to it and this is a confined space so good ventilation and possibly
a vapour mask.

Air movement won't interfere with the set-up time of the paint but temperature
will, about 70 degrees is usually ideal, you can add a little more catalyst if
the temperature is cooler, it sets up by chemical reaction. This is the same
sort of resin used in the original construction. It may be difficult getting as
glossy a surface as the original gel coat which is sprayed on a positive and
highly polished and waxed mold. There are probably specialist tub and shower
finishers listed in most major cities who will do this work for you. There are
probably also kits you can get from major outlets or home building centers or
check with marine suppliers, people paint their fiberglass boats.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Changing Color of Fiberglass Shower Stall

  Hi all,

My wife has decided that she no longer likes the color of the fiberglass
shower stall in our master bathroom. I know that it's possible to change
the color of enameled tubs and sinks but is it possible to do something to
change the color of fiberglass items? Thanks.

  Take care,
  Ed Przybylek
